Who is the certification for?
Generative AI Leader is the first Google Cloud certification aimed specifically at decision-makers, managers, consultants and business teams rather than developers. It tests whether you can place generative AI in a business context: which solution fits which need, what the risks are and how an organization adopts AI responsibly.
You don't need to code. You do need to tell the key terms apart (for example foundation model, grounding, RAG, fine-tuning) and know Google's products by their current names. Many questions are short business scenarios that ask for the best solution.
The four exam sections and their weighting
The official Exam Guide divides the exam into four sections. The percentages are approximate shares of the questions.
- §1~30 %Fundamentals of gen AIFundamentals of gen AI
- §2~35 %Google Cloud's gen AI offeringsGoogle Cloud's gen AI offerings
- §3~20 %Techniques to improve gen AI model outputTechniques to improve gen AI model output

Registration in five steps
- Read the Exam Guide. It lists every exam topic per section and is the authoritative basis.
- Study. Google offers a free learning path on Google Skills and a Study Guide PDF. CertWalk explains the same topics with audio and practice questions, in English, German and Spanish.
- Try the official sample questions. Google provides untimed sample questions. According to Google, your score there does not predict your exam result.
- Create an account and book a slot. Registration runs through the Google Cloud certification portal, where you choose an online exam or a Pearson VUE test center and accept the exam terms.
- Check your setup (online only): run the OnVUE system test in good time on the same computer and network you will use for the exam.
Online exam with OnVUE: checklist
If you don't meet Pearson VUE's minimum requirements, the exam can be terminated and the fee lost. The key points from the public OnVUE requirements:
- One computer: Windows 10 or macOS 14 or later, no virtual machine, no beta operating system; working webcam, microphone and speakers. Locked-down work laptops can cause problems.
- One screen: disconnect second monitors. Headphones and headsets are not allowed.
- One stable connection: at least 6 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload, no VPN, no corporate network and no public Wi-Fi.
- Zero devices nearby: phone, watch, tablet and smart devices out of reach; a clear desk.
- ID and room: read the OnVUE sections on the testing space, proof of ID and testing rules plus your booking confirmation beforehand. Allow enough time for check-in before your appointment.
Rule of thumb: one computer, one screen, one stable connection, zero devices. The current requirements on the Pearson VUE website are binding.
Timing and tactics during the exam
- With 90 minutes for up to 60 questions you have about 1.5 minutes per question. That is enough as long as you don't get stuck.
- Two passes: first answer everything you are sure about and flag uncertain questions (if the interface offers it); then revisit only the flagged ones. Never leave a question blank.
- Think like a leader: the best answer creates measurable business value with reasonable effort and risk; it is rarely the most technical one.
- For product questions, ask first: who uses it? Employees (Gemini Enterprise, Workspace), customers (Customer Engagement Suite) or developers (Agent Platform).
- Be wary of absolute wording such as “guarantees”, “eliminates” or “always”. Good answers reduce risks; they don't promise to remove them.
Study plan: ready in two weeks
- Week 1: section 1 (fundamentals) and section 2 (Google offerings) – together about two thirds of the exam. Learn the new names with the product map alongside.
- Week 2: section 3 (techniques) and section 4 (strategy), then review the glossary and take at least two timed practice exams.
- 20–30 minutes a day is enough if you study regularly – for example audio on your commute and practice questions in the evening.
Frequently asked questions about the exam
In which languages is the Generative AI Leader exam available?
According to the certification page, in English, Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese. It is not offered in German, so German speakers usually take it in English.
How much does the exam cost?
The registration fee is USD 99 plus tax where applicable. Each retake costs the fee again.
How long is the certification valid?
Three years. You can renew it within a renewal eligibility period before it expires; see Google Cloud's renewal FAQ for details.
Do I need technical experience?
No. There are no prerequisites, and the certification is explicitly aimed at roles with or without hands-on technical experience. You should, however, know the core AI terms and Google's products well.
How many questions are there and how much time do I have?
50 to 60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes – about one and a half minutes per question.
How hard is the exam?
It is broad rather than deep: four sections, with many questions about the right product or approach in a business scenario. If you know the terms and the current product names, you are well prepared. Google does not publish an official pass rate.
Where do I register?
Via the official Google Cloud certification page, which leads to the certification portal. There you choose an online exam or a Pearson VUE test center and book a slot.
Why do product names in my course differ from the exam?
Google renamed many products in 2025 and 2026: Vertex AI is now Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, Agentspace became Gemini Enterprise and NotebookLM became Gemini Notebook. CertWalk's product map lists all old and new names.
Can I practice with real exam questions?
No. Exam content is protected by Google Cloud's exam terms; using or sharing “dumps” violates them. CertWalk only contains original practice questions aligned with the public Exam Guide.
